Bargain of the week

So….. it’s been a while huh? It was almost getting to the point where it was either blog now or never again! Seeing as how my fan base isn’t THAT big, I’m sure I would hardly be missed at all. However, in case of any fear by any die hard fans, fear not! I’m here, for now at least emoticon.

Just as a brief recap of the past month. Before christmas I was still unemployed, no job offer before christmas as I had hoped, and no new vacancies were advertised for the entire month! So I took an enforced break from the job hunting, but managed to pick up some temp work. I’m not big on talking about finances, not the real serious stuff anyways. The other day on the train to one of my temp jobs, this girl was going ON and ON to her friend (and half the other passengers) about how much her mortgage was, and how much the house was worth, and how much her and some ex or whoever put in, and how much they took out, and all her home improvements and how much they cost etc etc etc. SO embarrassing, why would you do that? Especially in such a public place….. Anyhow, back to my situation, sorry, little sidetracked….. I’m lucky enough to receive a rather generous unemployment benefit from the government here. Which is of course taken away if I work for the week as a temp, they’re not THAT generous unfortunately. However, I worked 20 hours one week, and at the end of the week, by the time the benefit adjustment occurred and the wages came in, I ended up with an extra $50 in my bank account. $50, for 20 hours work! Plus I spent $20 on train fare. So we’re talking like $1.50 an hour for my time. Seriously, how screwed up is that? Where is the motivation for me to get a job? Why would I bother when I’d be better off doing shit all?! Crazy…. So yea, thinking about giving up the temping work. Maybe one day a week if it comes up, cos I can earn a few dollars before the benefit decrease kicks in. I think it’s cRaZy that it is like that tho… Clearly I want a job, generous as it is, the benefit is hardly going to get me ahead financially. But while I look for the serious career job, I’m gonna sit at home and enjoy the break!!

So that’s the job side of things…

Christmas was with the parents, only it kinda wasn’t really like christmas. As ungrateful as this sounds, the present side of things was a bit of a let down, I like a really good surprise, but it was all very predictable. Which will happen when mum gives you her card and says ‘go buy your presents, I haven’t had time’!! We are not religious in way, shape or form, so christmas is presents, food and family. Maybe not in that order, it is good to have a reason to get the family together. However my brother wasn’t there, and my aunt and uncles family was short a couple of kids, so it was very small. But it was nice to see various family members, christmas day was with mum’s family, but I saw a lot of my dad’s too while I was down there. It was my grandma’s birthday, then my mum’s birthday too, so we got to celebrate some more. I worked while I was there, for my dad’s company. Then I got over it all, changed my flight and came home early!

So I got back on new years eve, enjoyed a quiet night with a friend, caught up with another friend the next day, and then chilled out for the week… It was really nice though, I enjoyed the time to myself before the flatmates got home. Also one of my friends got engaged that week, so exciting!! It’s my first proper engagement, not like the girl I knew who got herself knocked up to this guy I knew, married him two weeks later, then divorced him about a year after that. This is a proper serious engagement, these two have been together for like 5 years, so it’s about time! It’s scary though…. I’d love to have a ring on my finger right about now, but she’ll be married before I even get close to being in a position to have that kinda commitment on my mind!!

The flatmates and oh so cute puppy are wonderful. From my point of view, and I hope they agree, it’s all working out really well! Touch wood… and we’re going to be having puppies in 12-18 months time hopefully, I’ve put my hand up for a chocolate labrador, it’ll be so cute!!! I’m pretty sure they will be providing the second engagement of the year very soon too. The unfortunate thing about the whole fantastic flat situation though is that I have nothing to blog about lol. But I’m sure no one’s gonna miss the crazy german’s, I certainly don’t!

On to the topic of the day, my bargain of the week, possibly even the year…. We have this thing here called trademe, which is basically ebay kiwi style. So I bid on a few desks, cos after living in furnished student hostels for 2 years I have no furniture of my own. The first couple were just too expensive for me. But then today I won an auction for this fantastic desk right here….

And guess how much it was??  TWENTY DOLLARS!!! How wicked is that? That’s like US$14, and it’s in like perfect condition, well it was when we picked it up anyways. Little accident on the motorway and one of the drawers is looking a little beat up lol (see the top right hand corner of the bottom drawer). But that fact the drawer remains in one piece is also a testament to how great this desk is, it’s nice to know that when it’s flies through the air at ~70mph, it’s gonna stay in one piece! Totally stoked with this fantastic purchase emoticon.

So that’s about it…. now you know why I haven’t been blogging! If you even noticed…. I’ve been visiting my regular blogs, but not commenting, so that those who head on over here when I comment aren’t disappointed. Hopefully exciting things will be happening this year and I can keep up a regular and more exciting appearance, including the appearance of the blog itself, I really gotta work on the visual aspect too :)

  1. I thought you had fallen off the face of the earth! It’s great to have you back! The desk sounds like a steal, but for some reason I still can’t ever see your pics. That means I haven’t seen the puppy yet either :( No matter, I’m just glad you have returned to blogland, I’ve got lots of changes going on you may want to check out as well :)
